Warner Music Group

The smallest of the three majors, and the company whose 1990s standoff with Prince over ownership of his master recordings became the defining symbol of the artist-vs-label fight for control.

Warner Music Group is the third of the major record companies, with labels including Atlantic, Warner Records (formerly Warner Bros. Records), and Elektra.

Its most famous dispute was with Prince, who signed to Warner Bros. in 1977 and spent the 1990s in open revolt over the label's ownership of his masters and its control of his release schedule — appearing with the word "slave" written on his face before eventually walking away and, years later, regaining his catalog.
